Where Should You File For A Divorce In California?

In general, you should file for divorce in the County in which you reside. For example, if you live here in Los Angeles, California, you should file your divorce petition in Los Angeles County. Residency requirement for filing a divorce action in California is that one of the spouses must have been a resident of California for six months AND a resident of the county where he/she wants to file for divorce three months immediately before filing. Fam. C. 2320. If the above jurisdictional requirements are not met, then an option would be to file for Legal Separation and once the jurisdictional requirements are met, amending your petition.
